Chicago, IL (March 18, 2025): The Tolton Ambassadors – Chicago is excited to announce the 2025 Venerable Augustus Tolton Writing Contest, open to students in grades 5 through 8 across the Archdiocese. This contest offers young writers a unique opportunity to explore the inspiring life of Ven. Father Augustus Tolton, the first recognized Black Catholic priest in the United States, and reflect on his enduring legacy.
Students can participate in two categories: essay (500-1500 words) or poetry (300-1000 words). Submissions should focus on at least two of Father Tolton’s many virtues – courage, inclusiveness, forgiveness, perseverance, gratitude, faithfulness, diligence, and resilience – and explore how his life remains relevant today.
"We encourage students to delve deep into Father Tolton's story and connect his experiences to their own lives," says Angela Hicks, president of the Tolton Ambassadors – Chicago. "This contest is a wonderful way for young people to learn about this extraordinary figure in Catholic history and consider how his virtues can inspire them on their own faith journeys."
Submissions will be judged on originality, connection to the theme, paragraph construction, organization, and mechanics. All entries must be submitted by a Catholic school faculty member or Church administrator to toltonambassador.chicago@gmail.com by 11:59 pm on Sunday, April 6, 2025.
Winners will be announced on Monday, April 21, 2025. Three winners in each category will receive cash prizes: 1st place $150, 2nd place $100, and 3rd place $50. An awards luncheon will be held on Saturday, May 3, 2025, where winners and their families can celebrate their achievements. Tickets to the luncheon are free for contest winners and a parent or guardian.
